Find out how to properly apply a KUTVEK decal kit. Preparation, heating, sticking and especially post-heating the edges for optimal adhesion.
How to properly fit a KUTVEK decal kit? The method for a perfect finish
Fitting a motocross, enduro, quad, SSV or motorcycle decal kit requires some method. Proper preparation ensures a clean result without bubbles or creases, but most importantly, excellent long-term adhesion.
At KUTVEK, we particularly emphasise a step that’s too often overlooked: once the kit is fully fitted, it’s essential to heat and firmly press around the entire edge of each piece.
This final step ensures the adhesive works effectively on sensitive areas: angles, curves, contours and edges of the plastics.
Before starting: prepare the plastics properly
The quality of the application depends heavily on preparation.
Before fitting your KUTVEK decal kit:
- remove the plastics if it makes fitting easier;
- thoroughly clean each component;
- remove dust, grease, traces of cleaning products and old adhesive residue;
- ensure the surface is completely dry before starting.
The plastic must be clean, dry and perfectly degreased.
Avoid fitting a decal kit on cold, damp or freshly cleaned plastic that may still have a greasy film.
Position the piece before applying
Before fully removing the backing from the sticker, take a few seconds to position the decal on the plastic.
Pay special attention to:
- the edges;
- fixing holes;
- angles;
- raised areas;
- joints with adjacent parts.
This step prevents starting the application with poor alignment.
Start from a central area
To fit a decal kit neatly, it’s best to start from a relatively flat and central area.
Apply the sticker gradually, working from the centre outwards.
Press with your fingers or a suitable squeegee to remove air as you go.
Don’t try to stick the entire piece in one go.
For large bodywork elements, take your time and progress gradually.
Apply gentle heat to complex areas
Motocross and enduro plastics feature numerous contours and curves.
In these areas, you can gently heat the vinyl to soften it and make shaping easier.
For example, use:
- a hairdryer;
- or a heat gun used very carefully, on low power and at a safe distance.
The goal is to soften the material, not to burn or distort it.
Moderate heat helps the sticker conform more easily to the plastic’s shape.
The most crucial step: heating after application
This is the point we particularly want to emphasise.
When your KUTVEK decal kit is 100% fitted and correctly positioned, the job isn’t finished.
You now need to perform what’s called post-heating.
Heat and press around the entire edge of each piece
Work progressively around:
- all edges;
- all angles;
- curved sections;
- recessed areas;
- strongly contoured zones;
- holes and fixing points.
Apply gentle heat then press firmly with your fingers.
This operation must be performed around the entire perimeter of each decal kit element.
It’s not enough to quickly heat the entire sticker.
The most important part is working precisely on the last 5 to 10 millimetres at the edges of the pieces, as these are typically the areas under most stress.
Why is heating the edges absolutely necessary?
When vinyl is applied to curved plastic, the adhesive undergoes tension.
Without post-heating, some areas may try to return to their original shape.
Over time, this can cause:
- edges lifting;
- small bubbles;
- peeling in corners;
- or poor adhesion on strongly contoured areas.
Heating then pressing firmly on the edges improves contact between the adhesive and plastic.
This step is particularly important for motocross and enduro bikes, which face:
mud, water, pressure washing, boots, knee braces, friction and temperature variations.
The correct technique
Once the sticker is applied:
1. Gently heat a small area.
2. Immediately press firmly with your thumb or fingers.
3. Hold for a few seconds.
4. Work progressively around the entire edge.
5. Repeat for each piece in the kit.
Take a few extra minutes to perform this operation properly.
This is far more important for the kit’s longevity than rushing to finish the application.
Never neglect the corners
Corners are often the first areas to peel when a decal kit hasn’t been sufficiently worked after application.
Pay particular attention to:
- points;
- edges under the plastics;
- areas near the engine;
- sharp curves;
- scoop edges;
- side panels;
- mudguards.
For heavily contoured pieces, you may repeat the sequence several times:
heat → press → let cool.
Caution with pressure washers
Once your kit is fitted, avoid directing a pressure washer lance directly at a sticker’s edge.
High pressure directed under an edge can naturally encourage peeling.
When washing, maintain reasonable distance and direct the jet in the direction of application, rather than directly at the edges.
How long to wait before riding?
After application, it’s best to let the decal kit settle so the adhesive can gradually reach optimal bonding strength.
Where possible, avoid fitting your kit immediately before:
- a race;
- washing;
- riding in mud;
- or transport in rain.
Application in a clean, temperate environment followed by a settling period always yields better results.
Mistakes to avoid when fitting a decal kit
Adhesion problems are usually due to a few simple errors:
- applying the kit to poorly degreased plastic;
- working in too cold an environment;
- over-stretching the sticker;
- trapping air in strongly curved areas;
- not pressing edges sufficiently;
- not performing post-heating;
- washing the bike immediately after application.
Among these, failing to heat and press the edges after application is one of the most important to avoid.
The key KUTVEK rule to remember
If you only remember one thing from this guide, it’s this:
Once your decal kit is fully fitted, heat and press firmly around the entire edge of each sticker.
Take a few extra minutes and work around each piece completely.
It’s the final step in application, but also one of the most important for achieving excellent long-term adhesion.
FAQ – Fitting a KUTVEK decal kit
Should you heat a decal kit during application?
Yes. Gentle heating helps application on curves and contours. But most importantly, reheat the kit once fully applied, particularly on edges and in corners.
Should you heat the edges of a decal kit?
Yes, absolutely. Once positioned, heat then press firmly around the entire edge to optimise adhesion.
Why does my decal kit peel at the corners?
The most common causes are poorly degreased surfaces, application at too low a temperature, or – most importantly – insufficient pressure and post-heating on curved areas and edges.
Can you use a hairdryer to fit a decal kit?
Yes. A hairdryer works well for providing controlled, gradual heat. A heat gun can also be used, but with much more caution.
Can you wash the bike immediately after fitting a decal kit?
It’s best to wait, allowing the adhesive to achieve proper bonding before exposing the kit to water, mud or pressure washing.
How to make a motocross decal kit last?
Good longevity depends mainly on proper plastic preparation, application without excessive tension, and especially post-heating with firm pressure on edges and corners.
